Stay Vigilant About Recognizing Coronavirus-Related Scams

Identity & Fraud Protection | Personal Finance | Life

While the coronavirus situation has brought an upheaval to society, it also presents a perfect opportunity for fraudsters to deploy scams upon the general public. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has received reports of text message campaigns and phone robocalls offering bogus cures and other virus-related items, all with the intent of scamming the consumer.

The best defense against these kinds of attacks is to stay vigilant, especially toward anyone you're not familiar with that is touting a virus-related message. In addition to phone and text ploys, online scammers are on the move with phishing attacks designed to spread malware that could steal your personal information. Be careful when opening email links you did not request. A scam may often appear to be from a reputable and recognizable organization, so always be cautious when accessing information online.

Other scams may involve the stimulus package payments, asking you to provide a processing fee to receive your check. The CUNA Mutual Group, a partner to credit unions nationwide providing financial information and administrative services, addresses this situation and others like it here, along with providing additional information to be aware of.

All in all, stay safe by remaining wary during this unprecedented time. It's so important now more than ever.
